How to score high in English Language Section of SBI PO 2018 Prelims?


For the last two years English Language section of various bank exams have given surprises by implementing new pattern. Meaning of Coherent Paragraph

Coherent paragraph means all the sentences are logically arranged having a common topic spread into different sentences. This exercise is given with a misfit sentence related to the theme or context of the passage given. One has to choose the misfit sentence given in the options. It is similar to Para-jumbles question.

In Para-jumble exercise you have to find the correct sequence but in this you need to exclude a sentence which is misfit. It is a twisted form of Para-jumble which has given a nightmare to the students last year.

In this question you are given set of sentences where one sentence does not contribute to the main topic of the passage where as other sentences after arranging forms a coherent paragraph. Every sentence has a hint one needs to find out. There are certain tips to locate the same.

Tips and tricks to solve Coherent Paragraph in SBI PO Prelims Exam
1. Locate the common theme 

Read the sentences given carefully and understand the passage. It will help you each to the common theme of the passage. Once you have allocated the same you will be able to pick the misfit link of the passage.
For Example:
Based on the above tip, let us solve the question given below without unscrambling the statements given-
Direction: Below in each question, some sentences are given,  find the sentence which is not really contributing to the main theme and OUT of the passage or find the odd sentence and rearrange the remaining sentences to make a coherent paragraph.
  1. In Madhya Pradesh, Laptops worth Rs. 75 crore have been distributed as a reward in the last six years to over 39,000 meritorious students for performing excellently in 12th class.
  2. AIR Bhopal correspondent reports that the number of the students is increasing every year after introduction of Meritorious Student Promotion Scheme.
  3. The number of meritorious students was 472 in the year 2009-10 which now has gone up to 18, 000. About 9200 students of government schools and 8500 students of private schools have got laptops under the scheme.
  4. But what is more important is that the municipal bodies put in place an integrated system to transport and process what has been segregated at source.
  5. The criteria of 85 percent marks to be scored in the examination has been reduced to 75 percent marks for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students.

Ans. (a) in the given passage, D is misfit as it is not related to the topic in discussion as it is saying about municipal bodies transporting something which is not relevant to the distribution of laptops amongst students in MP.
  1. Recognize the opening sentence
Recognizing the opening sentence of the paragraph is another trick to solve this question. Introductory sentence gives the proper direction of the topic or paragraph.
  1. Find out the links
Try to decode the jumbled sentences and pick the odd one out. After identifying it follow the proper sequence to get the coherent meaning.
